British team preparing for Beijing’s humidity
The British team are preparing for Beijing’s hot and humid summer. They are bringing with them “cooling chairs”, which were used by firefighters in the Navy. After fighting a fire they sat in the chairs to bring their body temperature down.
They are also bringing cooling vests that were developed to help soldiers battle the heat of Iraq.
The military want to estimate survival time in the heat,” said Professor Mike Tipton, a 49-year-old swimmer turned rugby player turned thermal physiologist. “With sport, it is how many seconds will I lose? But the problems are the same. You are still trying to compete in an adverse environment.”
