Artistic Gymnastics at the Beijing Olympics

The gymnastics is always a popular event at the Olympics. Russia were once a powerhouse, but now China and the United States have the strongest competitors.

In the women’s event we have Shawn Johnson from the United States, who is favorite for the all-round event and is just 16 years old. On the Chinese side we have Cheng Fei who is just 1.41 meters tall and weighs a mere 38 kilograms, but she can execute two vaults with the highest difficulty rating.

In the uneven bars Dariya Zgoba from the Ukraine is a favorite and Yulia Lozhecko will put pressure on Shawn Johnson in the balance beam.

In the men’s some of the gymnasts to look out for include Kai Zou who won gold in the team event of the 2007 World Championships. Hisashi Mizutori from Japan won the gold medal in the team competition at the 2004 Summer Olympics and silver in the team event at the 2007 World championships.

Yang Wei from China won gold with his team and in the individual men’s all-round and parallel bars at the 2006 World Championships. Krisztian Berki from Hungary picked up silver in the pommel horse at the 2007 World Championships. Yibing Chen won a gold also at the 2007 World Championships.
