5 discontinued Olympic sports that should be brought back

Tug of war

The Olympics has a lot of sports that only get any attention once every four years. Sports are routinely added and discontinued at each Olympics. Here are some sports that were discontinued which we think should be brought back to add some excitement to the games.

Tug of War

The Tug of War was included included in Olympics six times and discontinued in 1920. I wonder which country would be favorite to win this event now?

Rope Climbing

Another simple competition rope climbing was part of five Olympics. Climbers had to climb a single vertical rope using only their hands.

Underwater swimming

Everyone who has ever had a backyard pool would have tried this. The winner was the person who could swim the longest without surfacing.

200m swimming obstacle race

This event sounds like a lot of fun. It involved swimming with an obstacle course. Competitors had to swim under a pole, over boats and under boats. In 1900 it was held in River Seine, so competitors also had to deal with the current. More entertaining than watching swimmers doing laps in a pool.

Live Pigeon Shooting

This event was only held once in 1900. The rules of the event were simple: to kill as many birds as possible. Not surprisingly it was a messy event with blood and feathers everywhere.

Results from the 1900 Olympics:

Gold: Leon de Lunden (Belgium) 21 birds killed
Silver: Maurice Faure (France) 20 birds killed
Bronze: Donald MacIntosh (Australia) 18 birds killed
