A Chinese group based in Washington is calling for the Olympic Games to be cancelled after Monday’s devastating earthquake. There is going to be very little to stop the Olympics in Beijing. China has put so much investment already in staging the Olympics, it is just not going to happen. I can imagine having a tribute during the opening ceremony, but I can’t see any benefit in not going ahead with the Olympics.

“People have died for more than 10,000 now and then there are millions of people living on the street without proper shelter,” said Wei Jingsheng.

“So to have such a scale of celebration it’s not only a disgrace to the people who have died but as well, disrespect for the living ones.”

He does concede, “However on the other side there is the issue of Chinese Government already spent … tens of billions of American dollars.”
