16 year old Shawn Johnson to lead U.S. gymnastics team

Shawn Johnson who is just 16 years of age will lead the United States gymnastics team at the Beijing Olympics

Johnson’s coaches include former Chinese gymnastic champions Liang Chow and Liwen Zhuang.

Her training was interrupted for a short time earlier this year by the Iowa floods.

“We’re all going to be competing at the highest levels. I don’t think anybody is going to beat us,” Johnson said.

China is going to be our biggest competition. Knowing they will be in front of their home fans gives us more pressure but we will be motivated to work extra hard to beat them.”

One of Johnson’s rivals is Russian born Nastia Liukin.

“We are the team to beat. We earned that winning the worlds in 2007,” Liukin said. “It adds a little more pressure but we’re working five times harder to win the gold medal at Beijing.

“If we hit our routines the way we can, we know we will come out on top.”

Would just like to say that my husband and I are not olympic fans. However, watching you compete was like a breath of fresh air. We were rooting for you all the way and loved seeing your big smile and watching the good sportmanship you exhibited. Keep up the good work and maybe we’ll tune in again in 4 years.
